A clarinetist, setting out for a performance, grabs his 3.49-kg

clarinet case (including the clarinet) from the top of the piano

and carries it through the air with an upward force of 35.9 N. Find

the case\'s vertical acceleration. Indicate an upward acceleration

as positive and a downward one as negative.

Applied force - gravitational force = net force

35.9 - 3.49 * 9.8 = F

F= 1.698N

So the clarinet will accelerate downwards.

Now a = F/m = 1.698 / 3.49 = 0.486 m/s^2
