A 20,000 kg rocket has a rocket motor that generates 3.4 x 10^5 N of thrust. (a) What is the rocket's initial upward acceleration? m/s^2 (b) At an altitude of 4000 m the rocket's acceleration has increased to 9.2 m/s^2. What mass of fuel has it burned? kg

The sum of all the forces F acting on the rocket is equal to its

mass x acceleration.

Initially there are two forces acting on the rocket just as it

launches. The thrust force (positive), and the weight of the rocket

due to gravity (negative). So you equation will look like

this

F1-F2=m*a

Where F1 is thrust (3.4x10^5)

F2 is weight (20,000 kg * 9.81 m/s^2) =196,200 N

Now you can solve for "a" by plugging in the values and doing the

algebra.

a=(F1-F2)/m

plug in forces and mass to get, a=7.19 m/s^2
