A 0.007-kg bullet traveling horizontally at 400 m/s strikes a 4.1-kg block of wood sitting at the edge of a table. The bullet is lodged into the wood. If the table height is 1.3 m, how far from the table does the block hit the floor?

after collision common velocity of bullet+block is V = mu / M+m = 0.007 x400 / 4.007 = 0.6988 m/sec

then horizontal range of the combined mass R = V x square root of ( 2 h / g)

ie., R = 0.6988 x square root of ( 2 x 1.3 / 9.8) = 0.36 m ( the distance from the table where the combined mass hits the floor)
