Two blocks each of mass m = 3.28 kg are fastened to the top of an elevator as in the figure. (a) If the elevator has an upward acceleration a = 1.60 m/s2, find the tensions T1 and T2 in the upper and lower strings. T1 = N T2 = N (b) If the strings can withstand a maximum tension of 94.0 N, what maximum acceleration can the elevator have before the upper string breaks? m/s2

In the lower block, net force = ma

T2 - mg = ma

T2 - (3.28)(9.8) = (3.28)(1.6)

T2 = 37.4 N

In the upper block

T1 - T2 - mg = ma

T1 = 37.4 + (3.28)(9.8) + (3.28)(1.6)

T1 = 74.8 N

Part B)

T1 = T2 + mg + mg and T2 = mg + ma, so...

T1 = 2(mg + ma)

94 = 2[(3.28)(9.8) + (3.28)(a)]

a = 4.53 m/s2
