A converging lens (f = 24.6 cm) is used to project an image of an object onto a screen. The object and the screen are 144 cm apart, and between them the lens can be placed at either of two locations. Find the two object distances, the smaller being the answer to part (a).

focal length = 24.6 cm

let the object distance , u = -x

so , image distance, v = 144 -x

so, lens formula , 1/f = 1/v-1/u

1/24.6 = (1/(144-x) ) +1/x

solving it.

x= 31.4833 cm and 112.517 cm

so ,

two object distances are

a) 31.4833 cm

b) 112.517 cm
