A ship sets sail from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, heading due north at 7.00 m/s relative to the water. The local ocean current is 1.52 m/s in a direction 40� north of east. What is the velocity of the ship relative to the earth? m/s and degrees north east, show work

vx = 1.52*cos(40 degrees)=1.16

vy = 7 + 1.52*sin(40 degrees)=7.98 m/s

mag = sqrt(1.16^2 + 7.98^2)=8.06 m/s

direction = arctan(vy/vx) = arctan(7.98/1.16)=81.73 degrees
