Light moving from glass to air changes wavelength from 448.5 nm to 653.7 nm. Find: (a) the index of reaction of the glass, (b) speed of light in the glass, (c) the frequency of the light in this glass, and (d) the frequency of the light in air?

We have:
w1/w2 = n1/n2 where w1=wavelength of light in glass, w2=wavelength of light in air, n1 = refractive index of air, n2 = refractive ndex of glass
so, n2 = 653.7/448.5 = 1.45

(b)
c/v = n2
v = velocity of light in glass, v = (3 x 10*8/ 1.45) = 2.07 x 10*8 m/s

(c)
f = v/w1 = 2.07 X 10^8 / 448.5 x 10^-7 = 4.6 x 10^12 Hz

(d)
f = c/w2 = 3 X 10^8 / 653.7 x 10^-7 = 4.6 x 10^12 Hz
