Gold, which has a density of 19.32 g/cm3, is the most ductile metal and can be pressed into a thin leaf or drawn out into a long fiber. (a) If a sample of gold with a mass of 5.549 g, is pressed into a leaf of 6.354 ?m thickness, what is the area of the leaf? (b) If, instead, the gold is drawn out into a cylindrical fiber of radius 2.000 ?m, what is the length of the fiber?

Mass = Volume x density
V = M/d = 5.549 g/19.32 g/cm^3 = 0.2872 cm^3 = 2.872 x 10^-7 m^3

Volume = Area x thickness
(a) A = v/t = 2.872 x 10^-7 m^3/(6.354 x 10^-6 m) = 0.0452 m^2

(b) repeat above, except use Volume = Area x length, where Area = area of cylindrical fiber of radius 2.00 ?m.
V = pi*r^2*l
2.872 x 10^-7 = pi*(2x10^-6)^2*l

So l = 22854.65 m
