A 1200 kg car is moving at 5.0 m/s EAST. It strikes an 1800 kg car at rest. The cars have an elastic collision and move in the EAST or WEST direction. The relative velocity between the cars after the collision is?

momentum conservation

1200*5=1200*v1 + 1800*v2

2v1+3v2=10

0.5*1200*5^2 =0.5*1200*v1^2 +0.5*1800*v2^2

2v1^2 +3v2^2 =50

putting v2 =(10-2v1)/3

2v1^(2) +(10-2v1)^2/3 =50

v1=-1 and v2=4

relative velocity =v2-v1=5m/s
